This is going to be the first of several posts of our trip to New York. It was our first time there and it was absolutely perfect! As most of you know, I am very close friends with Shane Vereen, and since he was just traded to the NY Giants this year, that made going to New York even more desirable for us. We had been trying to plan our trip out there to see him and Taylour (his amazing girlfriend) and October was the perfect time for all of us. Although I’m quite positive that Christmas is absoutely magical in the big city, we lucked out on the most beautiful weather while we were there. It was a lot colder than the 90 degree weather we had that week in San Diego, so it was such a nice change wearing coats, scarves, and boots! The leaves were changing and the crisp air finally made hot chocolate necessary! Before our arrival, I was most excited to try New York pizza, and well any other food that may be different from how we do it on the west coast. Lets just say the scale was not my friend when I returned back to SD.
We were fortunate to stay with Shane and Taylour who were the best hosts we could have asked for. Their condo is so gorgeous and is literally right on the Hudson river with THE most stunning view of the city. I never wanted to leave! In fact, now that I think about it, I said that every morning that I woke up there hahaha! The mornings were a little slow for us because of jet lag, but once we got going we didn’t stop until we hit the pillow at night.
Our first stop on our trip was the World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial. I’m not sure I can even put into words the feeling I had while we were walking around those grounds. I can say that I was brought back to that horrific day, as a 11 year old girl watching from the tv. I remember how scared, sad, and astonished I was watching this evil act unfold. Now I was standing in that exact spot, looking up where the towers would have been. Although I know I will never be able to fully know what that day must have been like, I felt like I could empathize with those there that day.
There were people giving tours who were actually there the day of 9/11 and just hearing a few of their words would make you tremble. While it was a very somber feeling at first, I then captured the beauty of the memorial and the strength that it gives the people of New York and all the Americans who visit. September 11 was a day of complete darkness, but from its ashes grew a strong and finally united American people who had pride in the Red, White, and Blue. This memorial is in remembrance of all the people who lost their lives that day, by the face of evil, but also its a reminder of the community that stands together and the American people who fought to rebuild. This was a place I will never forget.
Next, we ventured over to Wall Street. Bryant really wanted to go over there and see the infamous bull. Having his degree in accounting, he couldn’t help but wonder what it would have been like to work in this city. With all of the other people that wanted the same picture as us we had to fight out way in to get a pic…literally one pic haha! We had already worked up an appetite so we zipped over to Little Italy and ate at a place called Rubirosa Pizza. It was a cute place with bomb pizza. My dad and grandparents are from Jersey and they always ask for their pizza extra crispy, and now I know why. Pizzas in New York aren’t doughy like they are here.
Our last stop was Soho,- to do a little shopping. Thank goodness Taylour was our tourguide and new right where to take us. The shopping was great, the space inside stores for a stroller was not haha! We walked around as long as we could and then hopped back on the ferry to head home. The ferry ride was always so peaceful after a busy day with the best view around!
Hope this gives you all a glimpse of what our first day out in the city was like. Do you remember your first trip to New York? What things did you do the first day?
